This Week: Rejecting Beauty Standards & Choosing Happiness
I had a different newsletter planned for this week, but, I’d like to talk about what’s been on my mind since the terrorist attack took place in Israel two Saturdays ago. I know what you must be thinking – this is a beauty newsletter – how is this relevant? I promise you, it is.
This past weekend I did bridal makeup for the most beautiful people – truly, they were stunningly beautiful inside and out. Even though I was only with them for a short time, I felt surrounded by kindness and genuine compassion, and to my surprise, I cried when I left.
I cried because it was such a relief to experience such love and kindness after seeing such atrocities. I cried because it showed me how far we have strayed from being the good Samaritans we know to be. I cried because it showed me that I too need to lead a more compassionate existence.
We need more love in this world, and less judgement. Societal standards of beauty are suffocatingly limiting, and force people to feel like they're not good enough. How can we have the capacity to love others when we have a tough time loving ourselves? I know one thing to be true and I’ve seen it with each of my clients: beauty radiates from the inside out.
My goal is to help my clients to feel confident in their own skin by embracing what makes them THEM.
Screw societal beauty standards and do what makes you feel your happiest, because happiness radiates from the inside out and is 100% contagious.
When it comes to makeup, bright colors always give me a mood boost. Here are some of my favorites as of late.
Patrick Ta Major Headlines Double-Take Crème & Powder Blush Duos provide the most perfect shades and textures, and are super long-wearing. I currently have the shades She’s So LA (a bronzed nude), She’s Wanted (a rich berry), and She’s a Doll (a bright neutral pink), but I definitely plan to get the other eight shades in the line!
Lisa Eldridge Gloss Embrace Lip Gloss in Charm is the most gorgeous bubblegum pink that is flattering on everyone. It brightens and softens the overall look with just one swipe. I use this on so many of my clients, regardless of whether they have warm, cool, or neutral undertones.
Here are the star products I used to achieve this look on my stunning bride from this past weekend.
Complexion: We wanted her skin to look like skin, which is why I used Tom Ford Flawless Glow Foundation (mixed shades 1.1 and 2.0), Giorgio Armani Power Fabric Concealer for the undereye (shade 2), and Kosas Cloud Set Baked Setting & Smoothing Powder (shade Breezy) to set.
These products all provide the most seamless coverage, and the Kosas powder blurs better than any other pressed powder I’ve used!
Eyes: I used minimal shadow and liner, and focused on the lash line. I love the fluttery effect achieved with Kiss Lash Couture Faux Lashes. I customized the lash application to her eye shape by alternating between short and medium length lashes.
Lips: I first applied Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Liner (shade Pillow Talk) for a slight plumping effect, and topped it off with Lisa Eldridge Gloss Embrace Lip Gloss (shade Charm) for the most gorgeous pink hue.
